Top 10 Questions Couples Ask Me as a Marriage Celebrant

(Especially in Byron Bay & the Tweed Coast)

As a Byron Bay marriage celebrant with over 15 years of experience, I’ve been lucky enough to stand beside hundreds of couples on their big day — and answer just about every wedding-related question you can imagine!

If you’re planning a wedding in Byron Bay, the Tweed Coast, or Northern NSW, here are the top 10 questions couples ask me — plus the answers that help ease nerves and bring clarity.

1. How Long Does a Wedding Ceremony Usually Go For?

Most ceremonies I officiate go for 20 to 30 minutes. That includes the entrances, your love story, legal wording, vows, rings, the big kiss, and the signing of your marriage certificates.

It’s long enough to feel meaningful — but never drags. I make sure the ceremony flows naturally and reflects you.

2. Can We Write Our Own Wedding Vows?

Absolutely — and I encourage it! I provide a fantastic vow support guide and offer feedback if you want help shaping your words. Your vows should sound like you — heartfelt, honest, romantic, funny, or all of the above.

3. Do You Travel to Our Venue?

Yes. I’m based in Pottsville on the Tweed Coast, and regularly travel across Byron Bay, the Tweed Coast, Gold Coast, and even up to Brisbane or down to Yamba.

If your venue is outside my local zone, I may include a travel fee to cover time and fuel — I’ll always quote this upfront.

4. Do We Need a Wedding Rehearsal?

Not always — but it can definitely help! If your venue is nearby and available, we can meet on-site for a run-through, or jump on a video chat if that’s easier. It’s a great chance to go over the flow, settle any nerves, and make sure everyone’s on the same page.

5. Do You Supply a PA System and Microphone?

Yes, I bring a Bose S1 Pro PA system with a wireless microphone — perfect for outdoor weddings and beach ceremonies in Byron Bay or the Tweed Coast. It’s battery-powered and Bluetooth-ready, so we can play your ceremony music directly from a phone or playlist.

6. What’s the Legal Process to Get Married in Australia?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  1. Lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least 1 month before your ceremony
  2. Provide valid ID (passport, or birth certificate + photo ID)
  3. Say the legally required vows and sign your marriage certificates
  4. I register your marriage with Births, Deaths & Marriages after the ceremony

I guide you through the whole process and take care of the legal stuff.

7. Can a Friend Help Run the Ceremony?

Definitely. I’ve officiated many ceremonies where a friend or family member delivers the love story, while I handle the legal wording and official parts.

It’s a beautiful way to include someone close to you — and I’ll help coach them to make sure it all flows smoothly.

8. How Do We Book You?

Once you enquire and I confirm availability, I’ll send through:

  • My fees and inclusions
  • A $500 non-refundable booking fee to secure your date
  • Final balance is due 1 month before the wedding

Some couples book me straight away, others like to meet first (in person or via video). Either way, it’s easy and pressure-free.

9. Do You Offer MC Services for the Reception?

Yes! If you want a familiar face to carry the energy into your reception, I offer Byron Bay + Tweed Coast + Gold Coast wedding MC services as an optional add-on. I help manage timing, intros, speeches, and flow — so you can relax and enjoy the celebration.

10. What Makes You Different from Other Celebrants?

Great question. I bring:

  • 15+ years of experience
  • A balance of heart, humour, and professionalism
  • A calm energy that helps settle nerves
  • A ceremony that feels relaxed, real, and uniquely you

Plus, as a Byron Bay celebrant, I know the best local venues, vendors, and ceremony spots — and can offer tips from hundreds of weddings across the region.
