With over 15 years of experience as a Marriage Celebrant, I’ve answered just about every wedding-related question under the sun! So many FAQS can arise when planning your wedding ceremony or choosing the right Celebrant, it’s totally normal to have a few (or fifty) questions.
Below, you’ll find answers to the most common Frequently Asked Questions my couples ask me. And if your FAQ isn’t on the list — no worries! I’m here to provide the info you need (including the things you didn’t even know you needed to know).

To make your marriage legal in Australia, we complete a few key steps:
- Lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least 30 days before your ceremony
- Show valid ID (passport or birth cert + photo ID)
- Bring 2 witnesses over 18 to the ceremony
- Exchange the legally required words
- Sign your Marriage Certificates
- I submit all documents to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM) for official registration
You’re then legally hitched, off you head into your Married life.
So, you’ve checked out my site, loved what I offer, and sent through an enquiry — YES! If I’m available, I’ll email you my fees and inclusions.
Some couples are confident and are keen to Lock Ben In. I send through an Invoice, a Booking Fee of $500.00 is paid, Lets Go!!
Others are keen to make sure it feels like a fit, we’ll lock in a time to meet — either in person or over a video chat (perfect for couples interstate or juggling the 9–5).
During our first chat:
- We swap stories and get to know each other
- I take notes on your love story — the fun, the quirks, the magic
- We chat about your venue, vision, and ceremony vibes
- I guide you through the next steps to co-create a personal, relaxed, and stress-free ceremony
If you come away from that meeting with all the right feels – Awesome!!! Then I send through an Invoice to lock it all in.
To lock in your ceremony time and date, a $500 non-refundable Booking Fee is required.
The balance is due 1 month before your wedding.

Want to walk through the ceremony at your Venue before the wedding date?
Yes, I offer a rehearsal at your Venue if it’s in close enough proximity to my home base of Pottsville. This will depend upon our mutual availability and that of your venue as well. Not all Venues and Planning Teams offer this service
We can meet in person or also via a Video Chat to run through movement, flow, and logistics.
- I’m keen to make sure we’re all on the same page

Yes, I have an awesome Bose s1 Pro PA system:
- It’s battery powered
- Has a fabulous Seinheiser Wireless Microphone system
- We can bluetooth a Phone / Device to my PA to play the music in the ceremony.
- This PA is great for a ceremony up to 150 guests.
- Everyone will hear clearly what is happening in the ceremony.
- Your ceremony tunes will sound amazing
All of my ceremonies are custom written to celebrate the authentic journey of two humans in love.
I supply my couples with a Questionnaire which enables them to let me know, in their own Unique Language:
- Where have they been
- Where are they at
- Where are they looking forwards to going
- What do they Love about each other
- What do they enjoy doing together
- Why are they getting married to their Fav Human on planet earth
- What drives them crazy about each other
I take this intel and notes I have taken in our Meeting and create a ceremony that’s truly You. Something that celebrates your absolutely unique relationship.
Your ceremony will have your Sense of Humour, Sense of Romance and most importantly you Language flowing through it.
I send you through a copy of your Ceremony for you to read through, edit and curate further to your liking.

I aim to arrive 1 hour before your ceremony begins.
- If the Bride is getting ready on site, I will come and connect with her 1st.
- I will chat with your Planning Team, Musicians and anyone else involved in the ceremony
- Set up my PA – ” Mic Check… is this thing on”
- Do a video Selfie Story of your ceremony space
- Connect with the Groom when he arrives
- Greet your guests, meet your family and chat to anyone who needs cues for ceremony involvement
I value being On Time to a day that has a Structured Flow of events.
I’m based in Pottsville, on the Tweed Coast, half way between Byron and the Gold Coast. Some people call it God’s Country and as far as Weddings go, there’s some of the best Wedding Venue and Outdoor Ceremony locations in this area.
- I mostly work from Ballina to the Northern Gold Coast
- In the destination wedding meccas of Byron Bay and the Tweed Coast
- In the many weddings venues on the Gold Coast.
- I’m also found heading up to Brisbane Ceremonies
- Out to the Scenic Rim
- And further south towards Yamba.
Have car will travel. The further I travel the more the Travel Fee will be. This covers my time and fuel expenses.
Yes, I do offer MC services for your Reception as well. Here’s a summary of the package I provide:
MC Services Package – $850.00 Inc. GST, which includes:
Coordinating and prepping guests for the Bridal Party re-entry
Managing the flow of events during dinner
Introducing and timing the speeches
Coordinating the cake cutting
Announcing and setting the tone for the first dance
Pre-event support:
Communication and logistics leading up to the event
I’m keen to ask you what the fashion vibe is for your Wedding Celebrations, I want to blend in and ‘suit’ the vibes rather than wear Cocktails Fashion to a Black Tie event.
I will ask my couples what they’re wearing and also what they’ve suggested the Fashion Code is to their guests.
That way in your photos it all blends together in the colour tones and vibes. If you’re after the Tuxed Up Ben, let’s go – if you’re rocking casual fashions, let’s do that too.
I’ve got a great wardrobe of Dapper Fashions, which you can see in the images on this website. And I’m sure you see that I don’t mind wearing a stylish bow tie in my Ceremonies. I’ve got a bow-tie to suit all ocassions.
Yes, I have a fantastic supporting Document to help you create authentic and amazing Wedding Vows.
So here you are – about to sum up everything you feel for your partner in just a few short minutes. No pressure, right? Don’t worry. This is one of the rare moments in life where you get to wear your heart on your sleeve and tell your partner (and everyone listening) exactly why you’re choosing them.
Where Do I Even Start?!
If you’re thinking “Ben, I’m freaking out!” – you’re not alone. Most people feel the same way.
The truth is, the reason you’ve heard cringey vows at other weddings is because couples were given outdated, generic templates. That’s not what we want here.
Speak in Your Language
Your vows don’t have to sound like anyone else’s. In fact, they shouldn’t. The best vows are authentic, honest, and 100% you.
For you, that might mean:
- Writing a heartfelt love letter
- Making it light and funny
- Getting a little gushy and romantic
- Listing promises (serious or silly)
- Or even writing a short poem
There’s no right or wrong – just your voice, your style, your truth.
The golden rule: Keep it real.
Your vows are one of the most meaningful parts of your ceremony. Keep them real, keep them you, and they’ll be unforgettable – for you, your partner, and everyone lucky enough to witness them!
My couples send through their Vows via their separate emails and I can check them out to see how they measure up for length, vibe and content. I can offer creative advice to bring them closer together and helpful prompts if they require more content.
Most Wedding Planners & Venues will carve out 30 minutes for your ceremony to unfold. I often hear the fear of couples attending other ceremonies that were too long and boring. Not with Benjamin Carlyle, everyone is in the pocket and his ceremonies are engaging and perfectly suited to the couple.
On average ceremonies go for around 20 to 30 minutes. This Includes:
- Bridal Party and Bride’s entrance / Groom’s entrance
- The Story Telling
- Legal Statements
- The I Do
- Reading your Vows
- Exchanging Rings
- You’re Married – Kiss
- Signing your Paperwork ( takes around 4 minutes )
- Heading back down the aisle and getting congratulated by your VIP’s
Some couples will specifically ask for a Short & Sweet ceremony, no problemo.
Other couples will have a longer ceremony when they add in Readings and rituals. It’s all to suit what you’re seeking.
